What are the main performance characteristics of U-shaped glass?

Security

Wired U-shaped glass helps retain fragments. If the glass breaks during an earthquake, storm, or impact, the wire makes the fragments less likely to scatter than those of ordinary glass, reducing the risk of injury from flying pieces.

Fireproof

Even if the glass breaks, the wire or mesh can retain the fragments, making it less likely to collapse. Even when flames reach the glass, it can obstruct flames and burning particles, helping to prevent fire from spreading through the opening.

Fire doors are regulated under section 64 of the Japanese building code. Exterior wall openings must prevent the spread of flames. A Type B fire-door frame combined with wired glass can be used as a Type B fire-resistant assembly.

Security

Ordinary glass breaks easily, allowing intruders to enter. Wired glass retains a wire mesh even after breaking, making entry more difficult. This anti-theft feature provides greater peace of mind.

Wire or mesh embedded in glass improves its integrity. When the glass breaks, the wire retains the fragments and helps prevent collapse, providing some fire protection and safety benefits. Drawbacks include reduced visual clarity, interference from the mesh and corrosion of exposed wire at the edges. By retaining fragments, wired glass reduces the risk of injury and is used in skylights, roofs and interior partitions. It also offers some protection against intrusion when used in doors and windows. Mesh-reinforced glass can serve as a second-class fire-resistant door or window material. Ordinary glass can shatter during a fire, allowing airflow that promotes fire spread. Wired glass may crack but can remain in place, helping restrict airflow and the spread of fire. It is also used in buildings requiring resistance to earthquakes or industrial vibration. Wire and mesh improve the behavior of brittle flat glass, providing a low-cost, widely used building material.
